If you're here, you've found a podcast which is all about helping Catholics,

in particular, understand the word of God in a truly academic way, helping them understand

what God was trying to communicate through his word on the literal level, which is where we must

start if we're going to interpret the Bible properly. What is God trying to say? What is the original

author trying to say? And this podcast aims to help you do that by breaking down the Gospels

into small chunks. And we follow the lectionary for the Catholic Church. So we look at the gospel

reading that you would hear if you went to Catholic Mass today. Today, if you went to Mass, you would hear from Matthew chapter 9, verses 14 to 17.

So that's the passage we're going to look at today.

John's disciples came to him and said, why is it that we and the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not?

Jesus replied, surely the bridegroom's attendance would never think of mourning, as long as the

bridegroom is still with them, but the time will come for the bridegroom to be taken away from

them, and then they will fast.

No one puts a piece of unshrunken cloth onto an old cloak because the patch pulls away from the cloak and the tear gets worse.

Nor do people put new wine into old wine skins, if they do, the skins burst, the wine runs out and the skins are lost.

No, they put new wine into fresh skins and both are preserved.

Really, really interesting passage today from Matthew's Gospel, and there's a similar one

in Mark as well. So Jesus here gives three kind of

mini parables, and to understand each of them, we do need to do some real exegesis here to

understand what words meant in that particular culture. So we're going to talk about how weddings

worked in that culture, how cloth worked in that culture, and the third parable he gives is about wine. And so we need
