I've pondered this before, but why is it that some eras of history just get more attention than others?

Put aside regional differences, because of course Westerners like me are going to be interested and already know a fair bit about Western history.

That's an understandable bias.

But even within an established canon, there are just some topics that grab people's attention.

The American Old West is one of those.

There's something about it that spawned a whole genre of books and movies The Western.

But Napoleonic France, hugely consequential, but aside from the odd Ridley

Scott biopic, not as prolific in Western popular culture. World War II, huge. World War I, 2, huge.

World War 1, not as much.

It's interesting.

But there's one era that spawned interest that might even give the Western a run for its

money, the Middle Ages, castles, Courts, Kings, and Conquering, Knights and Shining

Armor, Maids and Waiting, Swords and Crossbows, Catapults and Trebushes,

excitement abounds.

Which is why the podcast we're featuring on today's Saturday in Matne,

gone medieval from historians Matt Lewis and Dr Eleanor Jane, might have an unfair advantage

against, I don't know, a show about Otto von Bismarck in pre-unification
