We've all across the globe been watching the terrible fires in Los Angeles.

The hurricane force winds that first fueled their fury made them burn like a blowtorch across the hills and valleys,

and it looked like some apocalypse out of an altogether different era, some time and place that was not, that could not, be a modern metropolis.

I kept thinking of other horrible fires, but they were all over a century ago, the Great

Fire of London in 1666, Chicago in 1871, San Francisco in 1906, Tokyo in 1923. Of course, of those, London

and Tokyo not only faced immolation in these fires, but again under very different circumstances

in World War II. On today's Saturday matinee, we are examining the fight to save London from fiery destruction

again, but not on the ground with hoses and ladders, but in the air with wings and bullets.

In the first episode from the podcast, Face the Attack, the Three Battles of Sailor Milan. Sailor,

which is a confusing nickname for a pilot, was a fighter ace from South Africa whose

ten rules for air fighting helped inform the success of the British against the German Luftwaffe.
