We're going to begin here with a major

weather alert impacting millions of people across the country. Half the nation, half the nation,

is now bracing for a potentially historic winter storm. In some places, the impact is already being

felt. In the south, cold and ice is the biggest threat, bringing dangerous conditions and serious concerns about the power grid, while parts of the northeast could see up to a foot of snow.

And the travel impact is growing by the hour, with more than 9,000 flights already canceled through Sunday.

And at the grocery stores, the rush is on.

Bare shelves in some areas as extreme winter weather threatens more than 200 million people across 40 states.

And states of emergency have already been declared in at least 18 states with officials warning conditions could turn catastrophic.

We have team coverage this morning across the storm zone and we begin in Dallas, Texas with Morgan Norwood. Morgan, good morning. Good morning to you, Witt. And temperatures have dropped by double digits compared to yesterday. And even here in Dallas, we're getting in on some sleet. You can hear it coming down. And for me, I can feel it. It feels a lot different from the rain that we've been getting on. But this is the time period that officials have really been warning about.

Now flash freezing with more snow and ice expected to pile on throughout the day.

We're talking about a rough 24 to 48 hours.

This morning, that massive 2,000-mile-wide winter storm setting in for more than half the country.
