Good Morning America. We want to get right to that breaking news that you're waking up to this morning.

The U.S. and Israel launching joint strikes on Iran. U.S. officials confirming

to ABC News that this is a wide-scale operation expected to potentially last for several days.

And you're seeing here video out of Tehran shows smoke rising from nearby government buildings,

a source briefed directly on the attack telling ABC News the targets include military sites and defense

installations. Iran now saying it has launched retaliatory strikes against U.S. assets.

And President Trump posting a video overnight on what the Pentagon is calling Operation Epic Fury,

saying the strikes are aimed against Iran's efforts to rebuild its nuclear program and urging Iranian citizens to take control of their government.

We're going to begin here with Chief Foreign Correspondent Ian Panel in Tel Aviv. Ian, good morning.

Yeah, good morning, Gio. It has been a momentous morning here in the Middle East.

We were woken up around 8 a.m. to the sound of sirens, an alert on all of our phones telling us that Israel had launched a military operation against Iran.

It became clear very soon after that this was a joint U.S.-Israeli operation.

As you say, targeting Iran's nuclear facilities,

targeting its missile facilities.

But ABC News now confirming through sources

that they're also struck at the Ayatollah himself,

the supreme leader of Iran and the president,

no news on whether or not those strikes were successful.
