Live from ABC News headquarters in New York City, this is Good Morning America.

We do begin this morning with those

coast-to-coast storms and what they could mean for the holiday flight or drive home. We have

team coverage this morning. ABC's Morgan Norwood starts us off with some intense winter weather

in a snowy New York City. Good morning, Morgan. Hey, Janae, good morning to you. And it is still coming down several inches on the ground here in New York.

And what makes this especially dangerous is that it's got that sleep mixed in.

So on the outside, the snow looks soft, but as this freezes over, that makes conditions especially treacherous,

which is why we've heard officials for hours now say, if you don't have to be out in this, just simply stay home.

Overnight, that powerful winter storm lashing the northeast with layers of heavy snow and ice.

In western New York, snow stacking up on roads, blinding snow falling on Interstate 684 through Bedford,

driving treacherous.

And on Long Island, this heavy snow blanketing northern Nassau County.

Philadelphia highways turning to slush.

Several crashes reported as conditions worsen.

And in New Jersey, icicles forming beneath cars.

Both New Jersey and New York declaring states of emergency. The state of New York

unleashing an army of more than 1,600 plow and salt trucks now racing to clear snow-covered streets.

In the Midwest, drenching rain in Detroit. And in Saginaw County, Michigan, icy conditions forcing the Zawaki Bridge to shut down.

Watches plows carefully to glaze the road after multiple crashes.
