Today's Great Life was a Scottish American, a traveler and a soldier. He ended up in India

and joined a Maharaja's Sikh army in the 19th century just before the British Raj took over. He's been dismissed as a plagiarist, a fantasist, a downright

liar and a scoundrel, but making the case for him to be recognized as a great life is my guest, the author and journalist Satnam San Guerra, whose memoir, The Boy with

the Top Not, is currently being made into a BBC drama.

Satnam, first tell us who you've nominated as your great life.

Alexander Gardner, and to be honest, I knew very little about him until very recently,

and I'm not even sure he's a very good person, but if even half of what we know about him is true,

he truly had an amazing great life.

And also I think his story sheds important light on the Sikh Empire, which as a Sikh, I'm always going to be intrigued by.

I think you understand it. I think of a tenth of what we know about him was true.

It is, it's an extraordinary life. We've a picture here of this remarkable

looking figure in a sort of tartan trouser suit with a Sikh turban and white plumed feathers on his head an enormous long

beard and an enormous long nose. What an extraordinary looking person.
