I grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, youngest of five kids, so big family and everybody loved music.

So it was always kind of spinning on the record player

and different genres

and probably was exposed to more

because of the way that it wasn't in headphones at that point,

it's like the record player is a central piece in the house.

And so the way music reflected the personalities

of my siblings and my parents

and kind of informed who we are and

the soundtrack of our lives. For the last 16 years, Sandra McCracken's been carving out a life,

writing and recording music. Her records have always had their roots in Americana, but they range

from the sparse and straightforward songs of Gypsy Flat Road to the dense and

surprising arrangements of desire-like dynamite.

She's also recorded several albums of songs for the church, both original songs and old hymns

set to new melodies.

The variety in her catalog reflects the variety of the music in her house, especially the

contrast between the music of her father and her mother.
