longtime listeners may remember our many, many discussions in the late 1990s

on U.S. economic sanctions imposed on Iraq.

Especially our conversations with three-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee Kathy Kelly of what

was then called Voices in the Wilderness and how they were openly violating sanctions

by telling the US State Department they were illegally crossing the border

and bringing medical aid and toys for children into Iraq as we learned back then and we will discuss today

Economic sanctions are imposed on often weaker countries by wealthy nations

who are upset with the actions of those nations governments.

The idea is to apply pressure to the nation's economy against the

offending government, possibly voting it out of

office or overthrowing it and replacing it with one that conforms more to the desires and demands

of the powerful.

It's all in an attempt to find an alternative to

the what is perceived as the far more brutal practice of military engagement in

war. On top of that, when applying economic sanctions, you do not have to make a legal declaration

of war and thereby circumventing all that entails legally.
