I think about Psalm 119, 162. It says, I rejoice at your word like one who finds great spoil.

There is spoil. There's treasure waiting for you and me every day in God's word, not just so that we know it and understand it,

but so that we know God and walk in love relationship with God.

That's why I wrote this book to help you toward that end.

Job chapter 23, verse 10,

but he knows the way that I take.

When he has tried me, I shall come out as gold.

That is powerful language that reflects a theme we see all over the Bible, that testing, that trials

in our lives are producing something in us. Job says trials refine me in such a way that I come out as gold.

Makes me think of Romans chapter 5.

We rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance.

And endurance produces character.

And character produces hope.

And hope does not put us to shame because God has poured out his love

into our hearts through the Holy Spirit whom He has given us.

All of this produced by suffering.

James says the same thing.

Count it joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds for you know that the testing

of your faith produces steadfastness
