Summary

This episode is an introduction to a larger exploration occurring over on Patreon. "Ladies and gentlemen, at long last I am diving into the bibliography of one of Stephen King's most prolific contemporaries, the legendary Dean Koontz. In the horror heyday of the 80s and 90s, you could count on two things in the horror section of any bookstore: massive quantities of King books taking up one section and massive quantities of taking up a complete other section just a few feet over. Their creative output and their books' close proximity from the beginning of their last names caused a generation to compare and contrast these two authors, and created a conjured, imagined war between the two: you were either a King fan or a Koontz fan. Clearly, King won the larger pop culture war, but let's not count out Koontz. With over 100 books under his belt, he has been a reliable source of entertainment for decades, and for many of us growing up in the 80s and 90s, it was a treat to have such a vast treasure trove of riches to choose from. Though I grew up reading nearly all of his books, over the last twenty years, I'd fallen off. And when I needed a book to read, I found myself pulling out Winter Moon from a box of old books in my basement. It was one of the books I don't remember clearly, and therefore, it was a perfect book to read again for the first time. I have a lot of thoughts, and I'm happy to share them here on the Dean Koontzcast, one man's musings on the works of Dean Koontz!" Well, actually, you are getting an episode this week, but what this episode is is a sample episode.

So I just want everyone to be informed. If you like the deep dive analysis that I have done over the years on Stephen King,

0:40.6

well, you know that when those of us who were growing up in the 80s and 90s, when we were

0:47.9

coming of age and falling in love with horror, there were two authors in the horror section, both with the last name K, that people

0:59.9

often talked about as either or, much in the way that we talked about McDonald's or

1:07.5

or Burger King or Coke or Pepsi.

1:10.1

And in this case, it is Stephen King and or Dean Coots. And I have not covered Dean Coontz on the Stephen King cast, though I grew up being a Dean Coonts fan, as many of us were. And it has been an absolute blast to be able to re-explore and

1:30.4

examine Dean Coons almost for the first time all of these years later over on the Patreon page.

1:37.4

So it's been great. I've went through all my old boxes of books and I pulled out my Dean Coons

1:44.0

collection. Some are missing. I can't find

1:46.4

some of them, but I have decided to start to tackle the ones that I don't remember as well.

1:53.8

So what you're going to get in this episode, this sample episode, are my thoughts on Dean Coons.

2:01.9

So I have had the pleasure of reading Winter Moon and Dragon Tears,

2:11.9

servants of Twilight, and Twilight Eyes so far and Watchers.

2:18.7

So I have done reviews for Dragon Eyes, Servants of Twilight,

2:26.0

Dragon Tears, and what you're getting in this episode is the first of the Dean Coon's

2:32.8

books that I dusted off to reread Winter Moon, as you'll hear in this introductory part of the podcast episode that I'm providing as a free sample to everyone.
