Rogues gallery starring Dick Powell had come to radio in the summer of 1945 as the

very first hard-boiled private detective program. ABC would take the lead in that

trend for a short time in 1946. ABC was probably the smallest of the four major

radio networks. It had originally been the NBC blue network. NBC had a red

network and a blue network, but there were some antitrust issues. And so the

blue network was split off into ABC. ABC did not have as many affiliates as

much budget and could at times put out some very dubious programming. However, ABC
