Summary

If you want to look fast from the ankle down the Salomon S-Lab Ultra Sense is the shoe for you.

Salomon builds this shoe as a light weight (8.5oz),  minimalist  trail racer.  It seems as if Salomon understands the desire for trail runners to remain light on the feet with the requirement for adequate protection to survive the rocky technical terrain.

Pros:   Sexy, great lacing system, unique forefoot sense technology combined with protection at the perimeter of the shoe

Cons:  Narrow toe box (my opinion) not the cheapest shoe on the shelf

I have always liked the looks of the Salomon trail shoe and now I enjoy the run of the Salomon too.   Check out the TRN audio review.

And this is another TrailRunnerNation gear review because of trailRunnerNation we realize that without gear out on the trail you're naked. You're just standing there without any gear, without anything on. Scott, and in this particular gear review, you're at least standing with a pair of shoes. I don't know what else you have. the S-Lab Sense Ultra by Solomon.

If you've watched least standing with a pair of shoes. I don't know what else you have. The S-Lab Sense Ultra by Solomon. If you've watched any film with in recent film with Killian Jornet, you've seen them wear this shoe. This is built as a lightweight racing shoe for midfoot or for foot runners. Right. They have many different levels in the Solomon Trail running line, and this is in that top category. The one that you want to be using when money's on the line. You know, and I watched a, they had like an hour long video, Solomon Shoe, here's how we build it, this is what we're doing.

And they had Killian there, and they had him put on this shoe, and he went out and ran, you know, 60 kilometers and came back and they looked at the shoe and the scientist went and put a magnifying glass on it and checked out the shoe. See where the wire points were? See what's happening, then tweak it and send them back out. You know, no wonder he's in great shape.

He's helping build these shoes.

And so they put a lot of attention to and hence the name ultra sense or sense ultra. It's because the forefoot of that shoe gives you some proprioceptive qualities so you can feel as your landing. So your body can make the adjustments it needs. But it also provides on the outer rim the perimeter of that shoe some protection. So if you're coming into some rough terrain that you have additional protection for your feet so you don't wear them out in that 60 kilometers. After all you know how many steps in a kilometer there's a lot. So we need we need some protection. We built shoes for a reason. So I found it to be a great shoe. One thing is you know, and I've mentioned on other gear reviews, it's got to look good. Straight out of the box, this shoe has that Euro look that it looks fast. Well, it doesn't have the seams like most of the Solomon shoes, it has that overlay system. So it looks fast. There's no seams to cause air friction. Because I know that's been slowing me down. Scott is my seams on my shoe. So is this more of a traditional shoe or a minimalist shoe? What would you categorize it as in the Freeman Categorizing Method? Because of the lightweight, you know, 8.8 ounces, I'm gonna say that it's gonna be in the lightweight range, but it doesn't run and feel like a traditional lightweight shoe with nothing to it. So if you're looking for a shoe that feels like there's some stability and protection, but you still want some lightweight, it seems like kind of a nice crossover. It seems like all shoes should be that way don't you think? Well they have the proprioceptive capabilities but yet the protection that you need. Well you know look at some of the shoes that try to find that real lightweight minimalist quality and it just feels like a flip-flop type of foam you know that the sandals with the cushion with the mesh over the top of them they're're just you can roll them up, but they're just don't have that that sense of protection. I think they've done it with this shoe and I think that's that's a real nice quality and a unique quality. The other thing I like is that lacing system. It's a quick lace. The kind of you just pull on and go nice if you're switching shoes and a race. Yeah. Because you don't have to mess around with that.

3:45.7

You don't have to have the dexterity to tie your shoe.

3:48.1

I've never had to in the middle of a trail run, bend over, find a spot where I'm gonna retie my shoe because it doesn't come on tie because it just can't. So that's nice. And those laces must be made out of kevlar or something. Because they don't break. I've never worn out a Solomon lace.

4:02.5

That is true.

4:04.8

So I would say just to overall appearance of the shoot,

4:07.7

love it.

4:08.7

What you always like and push me to a con because I know what would you change about this shoe? Not necessarily a con but yeah what would you change? It's a bit. All shoes are not perfect. It's a bit narrow for me in the toe box. I would say I talk about the sensitivity talk about the sensitivity up front and looking fast, but as I slip into that shoe, it doesn't just say, hey, four foot, come on in. You know, there's a little bit of a, killing it must have a more narrow foot than I have. Did you have to use a shoehorn to wedges your foot in? I did not. I did not, but I would be concerned in a distance of 50 miles or greater. What's the side of my foot going to look like? I would want to make sure that I've tried it long before I put it out there on that, in that distance. What else would you like to change about this shoe, Don? Well, I'd like to change the price. If you're going to talk about cons, you reach a little deeper for the Solomon shoe and the $180 bucks United States dollars for the shoe and it's not, so it's at the higher price point. The S-lab sense ultra doesn't stand alone on that high price point. There are other shoes that towing the line with you know, I would say if you want to look fast

5:25.0

well and you got to look at the value too, Don.

5:28.1

Is it worth the $180?

5:30.0

You said it was pretty cool shoe.

5:32.3

It's only $90 a shoe, Scott.

5:35.6

So I say yes.
