I was about to fall into a trap there, I think,

almost of, I suppose, of hypocrisy. There are two little articles in two different British newspapers today, one of which is rather brilliant and not a little beautiful, actually, and one of which

is the opposite of all of those things.

One headline is, and a liberal spirit is gathering, and it's written by the author Ian McEwen,

and the other headline is cowardice of leftists who fail to defend free speech, which is written by a professor of sociology.

No surprises for guessing that that's in

the Daily Mail. So their decision today was to take a hate crime committed in New York State at the

weekend against Sir Salman Rushdie and use it as a springboard into more hatred, hatred in this

occasion of leftists, whatever that means. In McKeowne, meanwhile, a friend of Salman Rushdie's, who was very much part of that post-1989

when the fact were against Rushdie was made, the collective of authors and artists who

moved to defend freedom of speech, freedom of thought, freedom of writing.

Because as he writes this morning, we understood that freedom of expression was

the foundation stone of all our freedoms every right and liberty we possess has had to be spoken

and written into existence i told you it was a bit beautiful he talks in measured terms about what is

truly under threat in this country or what the true threat to our societies is.
