In California, a 74-year-old former police officer admitted to one of the most prolific crime sprees in the state's history.

Joseph James De Angelo wore a plastic face shield and an orange prison jump suit during the

court proceeding, which was held in a ballroom at Sacramento State University to accommodate social distancing measures

for the more than 150 observers, including victims, victims' families, and media.

De Angelo pled guilty to 13 counts of first and 50 rapes for which the statute of limitations had already expired.

His crimes, which took place in the 1970s and 1980s, began as burglaries and escalated to rapes

and eventually murders before abruptly
