Jerome grows in wisdom and understanding through years of study, spiritual introspection, and suffering. Despite his faults, Jerome fiercely and courageously pursues the truth, even at the cost of his reputation. Charity and piety are also exemplified in many of the characters, particularly the women in Jerome’s life.

This series contains moments of danger and intensity, including raised voices. Jerome experiences physical illness, a vision of Christ, and an attack by a demonic serpent in the desert. A monk recalls being kidnapped and enslaved. Church conflicts, false accusations, and harsh rebukes recur throughout the story.
