Late July, 1987.

An especially smeltering summer in North Carolina's hot, humid, green swamp

national park. Hiker Jerry Vincent has been lost for days. Jerry had stepped off the trail

innocently enough, hoping to do some bird watching, but when he turned around, it was like the path had closed

up behind him, almost as though the tall swamp grass had grown over his way out.

Jerry pressed on, searching desperately for a route back to his campsite.

But then the night came, and he was too exhausted to keep walking.
