My special guest is Leo Braudy who's here to discuss is book called Haunted On Ghosts Witches Vampires Zombies and Other Monsters of the Natural and Supernatural Worlds.

An award-winning scholar and author charts four hundred years of monsters and how they reflect the culture that created them

Leo Braudy, a finalist for both the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award, has won accolades for revealing the complex and constantly shifting history behind seemingly unchanging ideas of fame, war, and masculinity.

Continuing his interest in the history of emotion, this book explores how fear has been shaped into images of monsters and monstrosity. From the Protestant Reformation to contemporary horror films and fiction, he explores four major types: the monster from nature (King Kong), the created monster (Frankenstein), the monster from within (Mr. Hyde), and the monster from the past (Dracula). Drawing upon deep historical and literary research, Braudy discusses the lasting presence of fearful imaginings in an age of scientific progress, viewing the detective genre as a rational riposte to the irrational world of the monstrous. Haunted is a compelling and incisive work by a writer at the height of his powers.

0:16.4	And I've always been interested, one of my main interests, is sort of the relationship between
0:22.1	emotions and history and the way people feel about things.
0:26.6	I've written a couple books that wrote a book about the history of fame, going back into
0:31.0	the past and who's the first famous person bringing it up to the present and how fame
0:36.1	has an idea of changes in societies.
0:39.2	That the idea that emotions have histories and that they relate to not just to individuals
0:44.8	but they relate to a kind of whole historical and cultural context.
0:49.2	And that's part of the background that I've wanted as well, this book.
0:54.4	Just why do people fear certain things?
0:56.7	Why do people in general, what things scare us?
1:01.3	What makes us hide under the bed?
1:03.3	Why do we want to hide under the bed?
1:06.0	What's going on?
1:07.0	We see these things as kind of personal emotions and personal experiences, but they also
1:11.2	have a larger social context as well.
1:14.4	Other people might be feeling the same thing as we do even though we think this is just
1:18.3	me.
1:19.3	One is very, very funny, very weird, as you think about it when it comes to us as individuals
1:26.5	where one thing may scare somebody and may be, you know, totally unaffected by another
