Here on Pints for Jack, we are reading our way through the works of C.S. Lewis.

I'm David, and I'm joined today by my co-hosts, Andrew and Matt.

And this season, we find ourselves among the stars, reading through the first of C.S. Lewis's science fiction trilogy, Out of the Silent Planet. Today's episode title is named after

the 1996 Star Trek movie, First Contact, where the next generation crew travel back in time to

defeat the Borg and ensure that first contact takes place between Earth and the

Vulcans. And I chose that title for today's episode, because in our chapters today, Ransom himself

makes first contact with a hitherto unknown alien race. So on today's show, we'll find out what to do

if you bump into an alien on an unknown planet. And we'll

also find out the surprisingly practical benefits of being a philologist. But before we get to that,

gentlemen, how are you? Well, Matt and I are both a little under the weather. Yes. We're doing

fine. This is one of the perks of doing a remote podcast.
