Summary

For the last few weeks, the Trump administration has escalated its authoritarian impulses, from pressuring ABC to cancel a late night host, to deploying the Texas National Guard to Chicago. You might call it "authoritarian," but the voters are just getting mildly queasy. The Bulwark's Andrew Egger joins the show to talk about the news, the voters, and how we're even supposed to cover it these days.

Hello everyone and welcome to the Focus Group podcast.

I'm Sarah Longwell, publisher of the bulwark.

And this week, I'm bringing you a bit of a smorgasbord of Focus Groupery.

0:17.2

We could call it an authoritarian smorgas board.

0:20.0

We got a lot of stuff to get through.

0:21.3

First, we are going to check in with certain swing voters' queasiness about the Trump administration broadly before we dig in on Trump's attempt to deploy the National Guard in Chicago.

0:34.4

And then we're going to break down this new dynamic that has emerged on the right in the

0:56.8

canceling. They are the cancelers in chief. And so that's going to be a big part of today's conversation.

1:02.5

Because while the right was very much into free speech and state's rights, then they realized

1:10.5

I think that they care more about power

1:12.0

than principles, or also maybe just these voters do not understand free speech. It's unclear.

Andrew Eger, the bulwark's own author of our Morning Shots newsletter. He is here to help me break

1:24.3

it down. Andrew, how you doing, man? I'm doing great. Thanks for having me

1:28.8

back on, Sarah. If I called you our boy wonder, does that make you feel big, or does that make

1:35.1

you feel, is that not a nice thing when I say boy wonder? I'm starting to feel old as the hills.

1:39.7

Are you aware? I'm turning 31 in a couple of months here, which is pretty old.

1:43.4

31. I thought turning 30 was like the big system shock, but actually the fact that the numbers

1:50.1

have continued to tick beyond that is even more alarming, I think. I have heard it works that way.

1:56.1

Well, in any event, you guys, if you're not reading every single morning, Andrew's newsletter,
