Summary

We honor the anniversary of the murders of Joseph and Hyrum Smith and the attempted murders of John Taylor and Willard Richards in Carthage Jail.  In Part 1 we give an overview of some of the historical events that led up to the martyrdom.  We discuss Joseph Smith’s attempts to get any presidential candidate, from either party, to pledge to help the Saints recover their stolen property in Missouri and protect their rights.  We discuss his resulting presidential campaign.  Apostasy from within the Church and political machinations and bigotry from without set the stage for that murderous day in Carthage. Subscribe to our free newsletter - https://standardoftruthpodcast.substack.com/ Please visit our website at www.standardoftruth.com If you have any questions or possible topics of discussion for upcoming podcasts, please email us at: questions@standardoftruthpodcast.com

Hi, welcome to a special episode of the Standard of Truth podcast. Today we thought we would talk

0:17.1

a little bit about the martyrdom of Joseph Smith as we are approaching the 177th

0:21.9

anniversary of his murder. There are a lot of things we could cover with this, but we will cover

0:27.6

at least some of them as we go through and hopefully give all of our listeners a better understanding

0:32.5

of some of the events that led to that awful tragedy and of course one of the most important aspects of

0:39.4

church history. I think probably if you had to find a place to start, I mean, you could start

0:47.0

pretty far back if you're trying to find a start to the persecution of Joseph Smith. I mean,

0:51.0

as he explains from the moment he tells anyone about the first

0:55.1

vision, he's already has a problem with other people. But shortly after the Latter-day Saints

1:03.9

are driven out of Missouri, you have them living as refugees in Illinois, the good people of Quincy take them in, and they make the

1:14.0

determination to purchase land further up the river in Commerce, Illinois and outside of it, which is

1:20.8

later to be renamed Navu.

1:24.7

Now, they are able to organize their city in such a way that they get an immense amount

1:31.0

of power. And that's actually a little bit by design. Illinois at the time is controlled by the

1:37.2

Democratic Party. Now, there are two parties in America at the time, two major parties. The Democratic

1:43.3

Party, which will sound very similar to

1:47.3

the party that exists today, and also the Whig Party. Probably the worst name party in American

1:54.5

history, right? The Hair Club for Men Party. The Whig Party, it takes its name, really,

1:59.2

from their opposition to President Andrew Jackson.

They said he was acting like a king and the Whig party in England was the party that was
