or even earn the label, Crime of the Century.

But the stories that made headlines in decades past aren't necessarily remembered today.

I'm Amber Hunt, a journalist, an author,

I'll examine a case that's maybe lesser known today,

but was huge when it happened.

This is Crimes of the Centuries.

Ray Crump Jr. emerged from the chilly waters of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal that early Monday afternoon,

soaked to the bone and a little disoriented. On that glorious October day, the canal was lined

with foliage from the dense woods that were cut below the street level by a 150-year-old towpath.

In 1964, it was beautifully overgrown. Busy people, many who lived in the

up-and-coming posh neighborhood of Georgetown, would often walk or jog along the towpath for pleasure.

These were the same towpaths that mules were once lashed and made to trod, towing boats south to the Potomac.
