Summary

The 1989 Portuguese Grand Prix will forever be remembered for Nigel Mansell getting black flagged, having a collision with Ayrton Senna, then being banned for the following race. Sam Smith and Andrew van de Burgt join Glenn Freeman to discuss that huge controversy in great detail, as well as everything else that was going on in F1 around that time, including tension between Alain Prost and McLaren-Honda, Williams bringing a new car out so late in the season, Onyx firing one of its drivers and getting a memorable underdog podium, plus the only lap in F1 that was ever led by a Minardi.

The 1989 Portuguese Grand Prix will forever be famous for Nigel Mansell being black flagged,

failing to see that flag, then colliding with championship contender Et and Senna.

To imagine the sort of uproar there would be if something like that happened today is a terrifying thought.

But even in the days before social media and online coverage, this was a massive controversy,

0:27.9

with Mansell being banned from the following race at Horeth.

We'll get into all of that and everything else that was going on during a fascinating period of F1,

as Bring Back V10s takes its latest trip back to the first year of our V10 era.

Joining me, Glenn Freeman, for this one, are Sam Smith and Andrew Vanderberg,

0:46.2

two men who are very fond of this time in F1, as am I.

So, Andy, welcome along to your first appearance of Series 5.

When you think back to Portugal 89, what's the first thing that comes to mind?

0:58.7

Well, at the moment, the first thing that's coming to mind is that normally Sam and I are recording the Formula E podcast.

1:04.7

So coming here and talking about things that happened almost 30 years ago is a bit weird.

1:09.5

We should be talking about electric motors and

1:11.4

the wear of a motor rather than the thundering sound of a V10 and the V12. Now, but the thing that

1:16.8

always comes to mind when I think about this race is the most perfectly executed bit of reverse

1:22.2

parking in Formula One history. Even as soon as you sent me the email about this, I could see Mansell in the pit lane. I could see him engage in reverse in that car going backwards. Because at this time, in F1, you know, you'd hear that reverse was basically there to fulfill the regulations. And if someone went straight on at LaSorce or whatever, they could be there three minutes trying to hook up reverse and get back out. There's Mansell. Oh, just whack it in. Yeah, back up there. It's perfectly done as well. The way he just sort of puts a bit of a slide back in. So in a very long way around, that's what I always think of when I think of this Grand Prix. Excellent plug for our Formula E podcast as well. The new Formula E season is up and running. so look for that in your podcast feed.

Sam, what sticks out for you about Portugal 89 when the cars are a bit louder than they

2:06.0

were in, they are in Formula E?

2:07.9

Well, I shan't channel my inner Ed Straw and choose Roberto Moreno tolling his new Coloni

2:13.3

C3 in practice, although I was tempted just to annoy you, Glenn, but really, you know,

2:19.3

in a similar vein, it's got to be that incident really between Mansell himself, his pit box
