Hey, welcome back to A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace.

This is Shelby and Paul, and we are jumping into Exodus 4 through 6 today.

Paul, we've got a lot to talk about.

In chapter 4, there is a story that always catches me off guard when I'm reading through the book

of Exodus. God seems to get upset with Moses, and even it appears he's going to take his life.

Can you just walk us through this surprising scene? Yeah, so this is something that I think we

didn't really have space in the study to talk about. So I'm happy to

explain that. So, you know, it's interesting. And unfortunately, you know, we can't really know

exactly what's going on here. But that's okay. It's really because it seems like the text is

assuming some kind of background knowledge that the reader would have, that we don't have now.

Obviously, the Bible was written a long time ago, and so there's a lot of things that can get lost in, you know, time.

And yet, there are certain things that we can know. So circumcision seems to be a central part of this story.

You know, it's that God seems to want to kill Moses,

but then his wife circumcises his son, and then he relents, right? And I want to point us to a very

specific verse here to 22 and 23, right? It refers to Israel as God's firstborn son, right? And so Pharaoh is withholding Israel

from God, right, by holding them in Egypt. And so it seems almost like Moses, by not circumcising

his son, is doing something similar, right? So circumcision was the sign of the covenant that God gave

to Abraham

that we talked about in Genesis. And so it seems like, you know, Moses not circumcising his son is,

like I said, kind of withholding his son. And so now by circumcising him, he's bringing him into

the covenant promise that he was supposed to have done when presumably he was born, right?

And so, you know, I think, when I think about our own context, it's like, okay, what does that
