with my co-host, Beth. Hi, everyone. Today, we're taking a deeper look at the passage we

annotated yesterday, 1st, Samuel 17, 41 through 50. Beth, will you give us some insight into where the story fits in the

biblical narrative? Yeah, so at this point, it is real story. They have been living in the promised land for many years.

So we've actually skipped

ahead from where we've been in the past few weeks. And so we are now past the period of the judges,

and Israel actually has a king, and his name is Saul. Now, throughout the books of judges, 1st and 2nd

Samuel and 1st and 2nd kings, we see Israel at war against various Canaanite nations quite often. This is because

they, when they first got to the promised land, they did not obey God's command to drive out all of

these nations when they first entered. And so they are always now in conflict and at risk of being

defeated. So at this point, Israel's biggest enemy are the Philistines, one of the Canaanite people groups.

The Philistines are definitely winning the war at this time.

But sort of as a game, they've made this challenge to Israel that if someone could defeat Goliath, their giant war champion,
