Summary

Utah has been something of a bulwark (pun intended) against Trumpism, but even they haven't been immune to sliding into MAGA. And now, with Sen. Mitt Romney retiring, Republican voters are poised to pick a new U.S. senator there. The Atlantic's McKay Coppins joins Sarah to break down how Utah Republicans are different, and where they might go from here. They also discuss voters' assessments of Romney as he prepares to leave office.

publisher of the bulwark and this week we're taking you to Utah, where

there's an interesting primary for US Senate and where Republican voters are built just

0:19.2

a little bit different.

0:21.0

And that's actually what we're going to talk about today because the Church of Jesus

0:24.6

Christ of Latter Day Saints is the beating heart of Utah and of its Republican electorate.

0:29.8

The best known Mormon from Utah in contemporary politics is obviously Mitt Romney,

This was awesome. For a political nerd like me, nothing better and I appreciate you being here. Just a quick note up front, I'm going to use the term Mormon in this show, you know, like you doing your reporting to save syllables. So let's get into it. In 2016 Ted Cruz

1:34.4

won the Utah caucuses with almost 70% of the vote and Evan McMullen, my old friend

1:40.2

Evan got over 20% in the general election. In 2024 Donald Trump beat

1:45.1

Mickey Haley in Utah 5643. It seems like Utah and the Mormons there were more

1:50.6

resistant than most to MAGA capture, but that's eroding.

1:56.2

And that sort of was clear, I think, in some of our focus groups.
