Summary

Nigel Mansell made a shock return to Formula 1 with Williams in 1994, appearing at four races following the death of Ayrton Senna.

Ex-F1 driver Karun Chandhok and Edd Straw join host Glenn Freeman to look back on everything that happened on and off-track around Mansell's cameo, from the challenge presented by Mansell's Newman/Haas Indycar contract, Bernie Ecclestone's involvement, the role of Renault and title sponsor Rothmans in Mansell coming back, how his return was viewed inside the team, what lead driver and title contender Damon Hill thought of it, tension between Mansell and David Coulthard as they battled over a seat for 1995, and why Williams eventually chose to stick with Coulthard, despite having an option in its contract to retain Mansell full-time.

The death of their Tinsena left Formula One and Williams lacking in star power in 1994.

It didn't take long for a plan to be hatched to bring back Nigel Mansell into the fold,

less than two years after he'd fallen out with Williams and walked away from F1 entirely as the reigning world champion.

Now Karun, welcome along. When we first discussed the episodes we were doing in this series of Bring Back V10s,

you were quick to express your interest in jumping on for this one.

So what is it about the Mansell comeback in 1994 that stands out for you?

1:06.0

It's just a drama of it all, isn't it?

1:08.0

It's classic Nigel Mansell, the, you know, the shock arrival,

1:13.5

then bang, qualifying on the front row, then it's Battle of the Lazy, then finishes on a high

1:19.1

by winning the last race, gets pole position, then doesn't come back the following year. I mean,

1:24.6

there's just so many elements to it in a very, in a very dramatic

1:29.8

Nigel-esque way. Yeah, we constantly get questions about, oh, when are you going to do this

1:34.0

Mansell story? When are you going to do this one? Nigel's career obviously covered part of the

1:39.0

era that we don't cover in the 80s, but just in the few years we had of him in this era post-1989, he's given

1:45.3

us plenty to talk about. So this is going to be a great episode. Ed, always good to have you and Karun teaming up for another episode of Bring Back V10. So what comes to mind first for you when you think back to Mansell in 94? Well, it usually comes back to LaRouce, doesn't it? I always remember him having that contact with Hedacchi Noda at Hereth, which is just one of those moments that just amused me at the time. But also, even to this day, when I see a picture of Mantle in the Rothman's Williams, there's a certain incongruity to it, isn't it? And you see a picture in winning an Adelaide, Oh yeah're like, oh yeah, he did win an Adelaide. That was just ridiculous. Even decades on, I'm still finding it quite difficult to come to terms with. What an amazing story that was. And you got love the image of Red 2 as well. It doesn't roll off the tongue quite as well as Red 5. But I'm glad that that was a nice little touch that they added for Nigel. Before we get going, remember to
