Summary

"Hebrews 1 begins by saying that God has spoken finally and fully in His Son, who is greater than angels. How does the supremacy of Christ fuel our mission to make Him known among the nations? How do the warnings about perseverance in Hebrews 3-4 encourage us to keep going in difficult ministry contexts and not give up? How do you see spiritual maturity tied to missional living—both in sending people and in equipping them to disciple others? The book of Hebrews shows that Christ is ‘better’—better than angels, Moses, and even the high priest. How do the first six chapters begin to build this case, and why does that matter for our faith and mission today? In today's episode, Emma Dotter and Watermark member, Andrew Templeton talk about Hebrews 1-6, setting up the book and talking about how the themes intersect with missions and discipleship. Hey, friends and Watermark family. It is so great to be here again. So good to

0:55.0

have you, Andrew. Are you ready to just jump right in? I'm ready to jump right in, but I'm just so excited for Christmas. Let's be honest, it is my favorite time of year, just the avon of Jesus Christ. I mean, it doesn't get better than that. It doesn't get better. Ten days away. Ten days till we celebrate. Love it. All right, Andrew, we are in Hebrews. Would you just give us brief overview of the book? What do we need to know?

1:13.9

We need to know that Jesus is better. He is the best. That's the headline. That's the headline. The book is all about Jesus is the best. He's better than anything you ever thought, anything's ever been here before. He is the climax, the pinnacle of all expectations. And we don't know who wrote it. That's another thing.

1:45.3

It's one of the books that's been debated. Who wrote this? Some people think Paul, those people throw out Barnabas, I might throw out Apollos as well, but had to be someone who knew the Old Testament, right? Because we use about 40 different quotations from the Old Testament, and they do it from the Greek version about the LXX, which is really fun. And so how to be someone, some Greek knowledge, some Hebrew knowledge,

1:47.0

and who knew the Old Testament, Libidical system.

2:03.2

So that's what we throw out those names. Nobody knows. It was probably written in the late 60s because it's quoted in 95 AD by by Clement of Rome and most likely before the fall of Jerusalem. And who it's written to, we don't know that either. It's one of those books that's like it's not addressed to anybody. It's not addressed who is written by. We don't have too many names in there.
