Summary

"Paul writes Philippians from prison yet talks constantly about joy (Phil. 1:12–18; 4:4). How do we reconcile joy with suffering, and what did Paul mean by rejoicing in the Lord when his circumstances were so hard? How should we understand this ‘kenosis’in Philippians 2:5-11—and why does Paul root a call to humility in this deep theology? How do we keep from misunderstanding or misusing Philippians 4:13, and what did Paul actually mean in context? In today's episode, Emma Dotter and Watermark member Ryan Garrahan talk about the book of Philippians. Ryan gives us the context of Philippians and helps us see how we can study this book accurately, considering the context, to understand the theological truths we find in this book. Everybody, what is going on? You know what time it is. You're listening to join the Journey podcast with your host, Emma, daughter.

0:08.2

Thanks for joining this Advent season. We are finishing Year of the Word Strong as today. We are reading the entire book of Philippians. And I am back in the studio with my good friend and faithful watermark member, Ryan Gerahan. What's up, Emma? Ryan, it's good to have you back. So good to be here with a friend. You know, we could talk about something Christmas related, but since we're reading a whole book, I figure we should just jump right in. Does that sound good? I think that's a good idea. Okay. What do we need to know about the book of Philippians?

0:39.4

Yeah. One of the kind of most moving things to me as I was studying Philippians was getting a deeper dive into really who Paul would have been writing to.

0:48.5

If you do a little backtracking and you look back at Acts 16, you find that the church at Philippi was the first church

0:55.4

that was formed in what we would now call Europe. So something to know about me is I love

1:00.7

Google Maps. And so I went to look for Philippi on the map. You do love Google Maps. Yeah.

1:06.0

And so you can find basically the exact spot where Philippi was on the map. And so on Paul's first missionary

1:12.8

journey, he crossed over the EGNC from Asia Minor, which is present-day Turkey, and he made his way to

1:18.0

this Roman military colony of Philippi. And there was such a limited Jewish population in Philippi at the

1:23.7

time that there wasn't even a synagogue. And so Paul's ministry there took a different form

1:28.9

than most of his stops where he would go and he would teach in the synagogue. So instead of doing that,

1:34.0

he went outside of the city to this riverside that was known as a place of prayer. And it was there that

1:39.4

he met Lydia, who trusted in Christ alongside her household. She was the first Christian convert in continental Europe.

1:45.3

She had the purple threads.

1:46.6

Exactly.

1:47.7

And so then not long after that, Paul and Silas were thrown into prison because they cast an evil spirit out of a slave girl who had been making her masters a bunch of money by fortune telling.

1:58.8

And then it's assumed by many that this girl would have been

2:01.7

an early member of the church, as well as the Philippian jailer

2:05.3

and his family, who trusted in Christ after an earthquake

2:08.4

that should have allowed Paul and Silas to escape from prison,

2:11.4

but instead it opened the door for them to share the gospel with him.

2:14.3

And so that's how the church at Philippi started.
