Summary

How should we understand the kingdoms in Daniel's visions-and what do they teach us about God's control over human history? What does Daniel teach us about living faithfully in a culture that doesn't follow God? Who is the "Son of Man" in Daniel 7, and why is that title so important to understanding Jesus? In today's episode, Emma Dotter and Watermark member Bobby Crotty break down each chapter in Daniel 4-7 and help us understand the theological truths within these passages.

Everybody, what is going on? You know what time it is. You're listening to join the Journey podcast with your host, Emma, daughter.

0:08.2

Thanks for joining. Today, we are reading Daniel 4-37, and I am in the podcast studio with a faithful watermark member, Bobby Crotty.

0:17.8

Good morning. Bobby, you've been on the podcast before.

0:21.9

Welcome back.

0:29.8

I felt like you were the perfect person to have on for the book of Daniel because I recall being in the Watermark Institute six years ago.

0:32.3

And you were our teacher for Daniel.

0:34.6

And I remember, do you remember this?

0:37.8

You brought treats to encourage class participation.

0:56.4

To see Role Pop. Yes, that's right. I loved it. I'll never forget. We're going to be in chapters 4 through 7. We may jump out a little bit into some other parts of Daniel. Bobby, why don't you start? I know listeners should have read the beginning of Daniel yesterday. And hopefully before they're tuning in, have already read 4 through 7.

1:03.8

But would you just give us a brief summary of kind of what we're looking at in some context for understanding the book of Daniel?

1:05.9

Maybe we should start there with the context. Well, let's start with a good institute practice of identifying the key idea and the key verse. You remember

1:14.6

the key idea. The idea undefiled? Undefiled. And the key verse, I would pick the even if verse,

1:21.9

even if God doesn't save us from the fire. Right in our passages for today. But I would pick Daniel 1-8 because it kind of

1:30.2

sets the theme for the rest of the book. It reads, but Daniel resolved that he would not defile

1:37.0

himself with the king's food or with the king's wine that he drank. Therefore, he asked the chief of the

1:43.4

eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself.

1:47.2

And it ties perfectly with two of the big theological themes of the book. One is the sovereignty of

1:53.8

God. The other is the power of prayer. And I would also throw in personal piety.

2:00.6

Daniel lived a life that is worth us modeling today to be informed in the way that we make decisions to honor the Lord even in the midst of tough times.

2:13.5

And we'll talk about one of those tough times today.

2:16.6

Daniel in the Lions Den. But first,

2:18.9

how about a little quick outline of the book? Let's do it. Daniel can be broken down into six
