Today, we're reading Exodus 14 through 17 answering the question,

what do we learn about God's character in today's text? But before we jump into today's chapters,

let's remember where we are in the story. In Exodus 14, the Israelites have just left Egypt after witnessing God's mighty hand in the 10 plagues.

So remember when I encouraged us to think on God's words in Exodus 6, not to forget them?

Remember, God had said he'd redeemed the Israelites with an outstretched arm in mighty acts of judgment.

And boy, did he deliver. They're finally free

from slavery, but their journey has only just begun. What we see in chapters 14 through 17 can be

equated to a series of tests where God shows his character as he meets the needs of his people

in powerful and really unexpected ways.

Chapter 14 gives us one of the most dramatic moments in all of Scripture, the parting of the Red Sea.

The Israelites are trapped, Pharaoh's army is behind them, and the sea is in front of them,

so naturally they panic. They cry out, they're accusing Moses of leading them to their deaths,

but Moses responds with one of the most comforting verses in the Bible. The Lord will fight for you.

You need only to be still, Exodus 1414. And that's exactly what God does. He parts the sea,
