Summary

How do we reconcile the way that women are treated in the OT with what the rest of scripture says about us being image bearers? In today’s episode, Emma Dotter and faithful Watermark member Jessica Bishop talk about Genesis 34 and 35 and the story of Dinah and her brother’s reaction and vengeance on the evil that happens to her. They explain that this is an account of something outside of God’s design, and that the description the Bible gives is not necessarily a prescription of what God approves of.

Thanks for joining. Today, we are reading Genesis 33 through 36, and I am in the podcast studio with the faithful watermark member, Jessica Bishop.

Hi, Emma. Thanks so much for having me.

0:53.6

You're welcome. It's so good to

0:55.0

have you. For those who don't know you, would you share a little bit about what God's done in your life and what you're up to

1:00.0

today? Yeah, yeah, I would love to. So I grew up going to church, and so I knew of God and could tell you the

1:07.2

gospel, but I would say I didn't understand what it meant to really follow God.

1:11.6

I got pretty involved with my youth group and just kind of thought, this is what good churchgoers do, you know.

1:17.8

But it was over the course of my junior and senior year that I was groomed and then later sexually abused by my youth pastor.

1:25.1

So I didn't call it abuse at the time.

1:30.1

I blamed myself and wrestled just with a lot of shame. But that same year, a woman from our high school ministry started discipling me

1:36.3

and just really felt like the scales had just lifted. I saw her love for the word as we studied it,

1:42.8

and that just really changed how I viewed God and just

1:46.7

viewed my purpose in life. And while my identity was made new, I would say past wounds were still

1:52.7

there. So just kind of suppressed at the time. So it took another 12 years to really start to see

1:59.8

things fall through the cracks.
