In today's reading in Matthew 13, we are introduced to parables. Now, you might be wondering, what in the world is a parable? Don't worry, you are not alone.

Maybe you love parables and the imagery that they provide, or maybe they feel confusing to you.

I admit that parables can be tough.

As a recovering perfectionist who always wants to have the right answer,

they present a challenge that some other portions of scripture don't.

A few facts that we should know about parables.

A parable is a literary device.

It is distinct from other literary genres such as poetry and narrative.

It is a tool that Jesus used for teaching, and specifically

it is a way to make the hearer or listener think. So if your brain hurts while reading parables,

that just might be what Jesus was going for. It is interesting and something that Jesus

addresses in our chapter today, that parables have a unique way of making the main point seem hidden to some and obvious to others.

Jesus wanted his disciples to understand his message, but by teaching in parables, his enemies would often be confused.
