For this week's episode, we're going back to September, 1966. September 4th, 1966 was the first day that Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon broadcasted.

Jerry Lewis rose to fame as part of the duo, Martin and Lewis, with the King of Cool, Dean Martin.

They made 16 films together between 1949 and 1956.

Martin went on to have his own solo career and he was a member of the famed rap hack.

Jerry Lewis continued to star in his own films, most notably the Knight Professor in 1963.

In the early 1950s, Lewis was asked to host a telethon for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

At the time, there was not much public awareness about muscular dystrophy.

According to the Mayo Clinic, muscular dystrophy is a group of diseases that cause progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass.

Lewis agreed to help, and he and Martin hosted a telethon.

Lewis bradically hosted telethons for the Muscular Distifree Association over the next decade.

Then, on September 4, 1966, Lewis launched the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon,

which aired on WN-EW TV.

It raised just over a million dollars.

Accounting for inflation, that is about $9.5 million in early 2024.

Lewis hosted the telethon for 44 years and retired in 2010.

During those 44 years, he had famous guests appear on the telethon, including Frank Sinatra, Jerry Seinfeld, Robin Williams, and many more.

One of the most memorable moments happened in 1976 when Frank Sinatra brought out Lewis's former partner, Dean Martin.

Lewis and Martin had not seen each other in over a decade.
