On December 1, 1969, the first draft lottery was held in the United States since World War II.
0:23.6	The United States government was looking for more soldiers for their controversial war in Vietnam.
0:29.6	The first day drawn was September 14th.
0:31.6	So any man who was born on that date between 1944 and 1951 was summoned to enlist. The draft was very unpopular
0:40.1	and it strengthened the anti-war movement, but the war continued for another five and a half years.
0:46.2	On December 6, 1969, the Altamont Speedway Free Festival was held outside of Tracy, California.
0:53.4	The concert was the feature Santana
0:55.5	Jefferson Airplane, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Crosby Stills, Nash and Young, the Grateful Dead,
1:01.2	and the Rolling Stones. 300,000 people attended the concert. The motorcycle club, the
1:07.2	Hells Angels, were hired to be security for the event. They were paid $500 worth of beer.
1:13.5	They drank the beer in front of the stage for most of the day. Throughout the day,
1:17.1	crowd members became unruly and there were fights among the concert goers.
1:21.4	Audience members also fought with members of the Hells Angels who were becoming extremely intoxicated.
1:27.4	Things got so violent that the Grateful Dead chose not to play.
1:30.3	The Rolling Stones took the stage last.
1:33.3	As they played their song, Under My Thumb,
1:35.3	18-year-old Meredith Hunter tried to get on stage.
1:38.3	He was pushed away by members of the Hells Angels.
1:41.3	Hunter got angry and he tried to get back on the stage. A Hell's
1:45.0	Angel, Alan Pasacero, saw Hunter pull out a gun. Passacero was armed with a knife. He ended up
1:51.3	stabbing 18-year-old Meredith Hunter to death. The stabbing was recorded by a documentary team who was
1:57.1	recording the end of the Rolling Stones tour. The Rolling Stones supposedly did not know about the stabbing and they finished their set.
