Summary

In the early hours of December 9th, 2001, a man named Michael Peterson made a panicked phone call to 911, telling them that his wife, 48 year old Kathleen Peterson, had fallen down the stairs and they should hurry because she was still breathing. Six minutes later he called back and reported that Kathleen was no longer breathing, she was gone. Initially, it appeared that this had been a tragic accident, but as first responders and law enforcement began to arrive at the scene, the tension was palpable. The Peterson family and friends felt that Michael was being unfairly targeted, that the police were only suspicious of him because he had been loudly outspoken and critical of the Durham North Carolina Police Department in his role as columnist for a local paper. The law enforcement professionals on the scene claimed that from the moment they walked in, it felt as if something wasn’t right, and there was far too much blood for the death of Kathleen Peterson to be attributed to a simple fall down the stairs.

0:18.2	So today we are finishing up with the Kathleen and Michael Peterson case. This is our last
0:23.4	episode in this case series. And I kind of left off last week with the suggestion about, you
0:32.5	know, something not being so transparent and upfront about Dwayne Deaver. So I kind of
0:39.7	will lead into that with this. But before we do start, do you have anything you want to say?
0:44.2	No, I'm looking forward to tonight. I'm starting to develop an opinion. I wanted to reserve
0:48.8	judgment until this last part. And so I'm holding off on it just in case something changes my mind.
0:54.2	But I feel I feel pretty confident with what I'm going to say. But yeah, you always sometimes you
0:59.1	throw things at me and then I'm like, Oh, okay, now now I'm not so confident. So we'll see.
1:03.4	I think I for the most part of the series, like I'm stumbling over my words because I don't know
1:08.1	really how to say this. But for the most of the series, I've been very on biased. I tried to be.
1:14.3	And I really didn't show Michael Peterson's side of things too much. Like I pretty much showed
1:20.3	like what the prosecution and what their evidence was. And yeah, there was times where I was like,
1:23.5	oh, that was shady and I didn't like that. But I really like focused from the prosecution's angle
1:28.8	for the most part. And this time I'm going to go a little bit behind the curtain or behind the
1:33.8	staircase, if you will, if you're Michael Peterson. And and kind of talk about from his perspective,
1:40.0	why the prosecution really did a horrible job and why I don't blame him for being upset. And why,
1:48.4	if he is an innocent person, which it's there's a chance that he is, right? This completely destroyed
1:56.8	every single like Adam and molecule of his life to a point where you don't really even understand.
2:03.0	Like I mean, he lost his his book going into a movie deal, you know, as soon as he was charged,
2:07.6	he went bankrupt because he paid out a civil suit to Caitlin at water. Obviously nobody trusts him.
2:14.6	He's not going to have any bestselling books because nobody wants to put, you know, a suspected
