On August 4, 1977, under President Jimmy Carter, the Department of Energy began operations.

The department was created in response to the 1973 oil crisis.

The oil crisis started in October 1973, with the organization of Arab petroleum

exporting countries, started an embargo against any country that supported Israel during the

Yom Kippur War. The war went from October 6, 1973 to October 25, 1973. The embargo was the direct result of President Richard Nixon

requesting $2.2 billion from Congress for military aid for Israel on October 19, 1973.

Congress approved funding in December, 1973.

During the oil crisis, the price of gas in the United States quadrupled.

The Department of Energy combined several other departments, such as the Federal Energy Administration, the Energy Research and Development Administration, and the Federal Power Commission.

The Department of Energy was created to conserve energy and to develop new energy sources.

He is also in charge the United States nuclear energy and weapons programs.

As in 2018, over 14,000 federal civil servants work for the department.

On August 15, 1977, we possibly discovered extraterrestrial life.

The Ohio State University in Delaware, Ohio, has a radio telescope called the Big Year. In the summer of 1977, the Big Year was looking for signs of extraterrestrial life.

There is a theory that if there is life out there,

extraterrestrial beings may use the frequency 1,420 megahertz to make contact because that's the radio frequency, hydrogen naturally emits.
