Summary

We really believe you can get help for you or loved ones who struggle with depression. Email depression@happierhormones.com.

In this episode Robbie and Kerry discuss the power that King Benjamin's sermon had on his people, and how they became a holy and powerful covenant community. They look at how King Benjamin sought for feedback, and what he taught about maintaining changes and having the difference stay with you. They also explore the change that comes to us as we better recognize God's power and love. They also look at how this should affect the way we see others, and what we should do because of seeing them that way.

We are grateful for our sponsor, Lisa Spice, and other anonymous donors. We are also grateful for our amazing producer, BJ Muhlestein, and for Rich Nicholls, who composed and plays the music for the podcast.

I'm your host, Kerry Mielstein, and I'm so happy to be joined by my friend and colleague, Robbie Taggart. Thank you for joining us. Welcome, Robbie. It's a delight to be here. Thanks, Carrie. Well, we are just glad to have you with us. Maybe I can tell our audience a little bit about you, and then we'll ask you to tell us a little bit more about yourself. So Robbie has studied

0:39.7

English at BYU and then also for his bachelor's and then comparative studies, which is kind of

0:45.9

growing on the English, I think, especially comparative religious literature from BYU and then a PhD

0:52.4

and theological leadership from the University

0:54.3

of Cumberland's. And then you taught seminary and institute for a long time, I think, like

1:00.4

17, 18 years, something like that. And we're even the principal of the high school, the local

1:05.2

high school here in my area. And so we've got to interact a little bit that way. So that's a little

1:10.8

bit about Robbie.

1:11.5

You've been with us here at BYU. He's a professor of ancient scripture for about two-thirds

1:18.8

of a year now, something like that. Is that right? That's right. Yeah. Well, what else should we

1:23.2

know? That's the boring stuff. What's the cool stuff? What else do you know? Yeah.

1:28.9

Well, something that has really shaped my life as I was a punk rocker growing up. Oh, that's right. I had a just a deep

1:34.7

connection with God on my mission that transformed me forever. And really every good thing in my life

1:41.2

comes from saying yes to God in a really kind of critical moment.

1:45.7

So I'm a dad of five kids. My wife is remarkable. She's a nurse. I love poetry. So there's a few

1:52.6

things about me. Fantastic. Well, wonderful. Thank you. So with all of that being said, we are in the middle,

2:00.3

literally right in the middle of one of the more powerful and potent texts in the history of the world, I think.

2:07.4

And in the history, if you want to talk about literature, we could spend a long time just talking about the King Benjamin's sermon as literature.

2:14.7

And it's incredible.

2:15.7

But its greatest power is in the doctrines, the

2:20.1

teaching that it teaches. So we're right in the middle of that, and we're not going to
