| 0:17.4 | Isn't it Halloween? |
| 0:18.3 | And you're right, it is Halloween. |
| 0:22.6 | But Reformation Day is a holiday that commemorates a significant moment in history when the Protestant Reformation began. |
| 0:28.2 | It all started back in the year 1517 when a German monk named Martin Luther famously nailed |
| 0:33.8 | his 95 thesis to the door of a church in Wittenberg, Germany. Luther, he had some |
| 0:40.7 | serious issues with certain practices of the Catholic Church, particularly the selling of indulgences, |
| 0:46.5 | which was basically a payment people could allegedly make to reduce the punishment for their |
| 0:51.6 | sins. His bold move set off a chain reaction that led to big |
| 0:55.8 | changes in the church and eventually a whole new branch of Christianity, Protestantism. For many |
| 1:01.5 | people, Reformation Day, it's a time to celebrate the idea of personal faith, freedom of thought, |
| 1:06.5 | and the importance of questioning authority or checking the things you're being taught against |
| 1:10.6 | the scriptures. |
| 1:12.1 | Luther wasn't alone in his views. Other reformers like Calvin and Zwingli, which I never know how to say his name, |
| 1:17.6 | Zwingli. Rebecca's given me a head nod, yes. Also pushed for changes, each adding their own ideas to what became a movement. |
| 1:25.5 | And over time, this led to the creation of many Protestant |
| 1:28.7 | denominations, like Lutherans, Baptists, and Presbyterians. Celebrating Reformation Day can be |
| 1:34.6 | seen as honoring the spirit of reform, the belief that people should read their Bibles for themselves |
