Today, we're reading Psalm 85, and the big idea is pretty simple.

0:15.5

God encourages his kids to ask him to operate in ways that challenge the status quo and put his character on display.

0:22.6

So let me say that again. Big idea. God encourages his kids, that's us, to ask him to operate in

0:29.4

ways that challenge the status quo and put his character on display. Have you ever heard the phrase

0:35.1

the new normal? Maybe something in life changes and someone responds by saying, well, I guess that's just the new normal. Take COVID, for example. Before COVID, whenever a snow day happened, everyone pretty much just got the day off. You got to stay home. But during COVID, the idea of working from home, this concept, came to be incredibly common. Everybody

long-lost friends or every once in a while conducted an international business meeting, but it definitely

1:24.3

snow day, it's not typically stay home and don't work, it's work from home.

1:28.9

Because of COVID, that's the new normal. Now, let's be honest, if today we're a snow day,

1:33.9

most of us wouldn't love this new normal, this new way the world operates, work from home.

1:39.0

But in today's psalm, the psalmist is thanking God for their new normal, and also challenging God to change

1:45.9

it even more. Though the people continued to sin, God had forgiven and restored them, and the psalmist

1:52.3

was grateful. Let me read verses 1 through 3. To the choir master, a psalm of the sons of Cora,

1:59.3

Lord, you were favorable to your land you restored the fortunes of jacob

2:03.9

you forgave the iniquity of your people you covered all their sin you withdrew all your wrath and you

2:11.2

turned from your hot anger now in these verses the writer is thanking God for his deliverance.
