Summary

How do I have peace when I feel far from God? All of us have a desire to have the answer to this question not only for ourselves, but also to help others. Emma Dotter connects the moon, man, and maggots to how God’s faithful character can give peace in the hardest trials.

All right, all right, join the Journey family, friends, and guests. You're listening to Join the Journey podcast with your host, Emma, daughter. Thanks for joining. Today, we're reading Job 25, answering the question, is it possible to find peace when I feel far from God? But before we get there, I've got a quick story for us. When I was growing up,

0:22.0

I was pretty involved in my church's youth group. And one time, we played this game where you'd

0:26.5

volunteer to draw a topic out of a hat and then have to give a two-minute speech on said topic.

0:32.3

Seems pretty straightforward, right? Well, here's the catch. If you stuttered or ran out of words to say before the two-minute

0:39.8

timer was up, your peers were armed and ready with water guns to hose you down if you fumbled

0:46.1

or lost your train of thought. It was a fun and silly game and the topics we were given were so

0:51.0

random. I think mine was like beef jerky or something like that. Talk for two

0:55.3

minutes about beef jerky. Pretty silly. But the point of the game was simple. How would you do if you

1:01.9

were put on the spot? If you were asked about your beliefs at school, would you have an answer?

1:06.8

What if someone asked you about evolution? Or what if your friend's mom just got diagnosed with cancer?

1:13.6

How would you respond if they started questioning God's goodness?

1:17.6

I'm pretty confident that all of us listening want to be prepared when those kinds of questions come our way.

1:23.6

We want to be equipped to respond to the skeptic. We want to be prepared to counsel and

1:29.7

care for friends when they're hurting. Or said differently, none of us want to be like Job's friends.

1:36.6

In today's chapter, Job 25, we get Bildad's third speech to Job. It's actually the shortest

1:42.7

speech, as it seems, just like in my youth group game, Bill Dad was running out of things to Job. It's actually the shortest speech, as it seems, just like in my youth group

1:45.2

game, Bildad was running out of things to say. The only problem is the words he did manage to get out

1:51.8

weren't the most encouraging. The thrust of his speech? Well, Bill Dad would argue that when it comes to

1:58.3

humans standing before God, we're hopeless or worthless. And if

2:02.2

humans are hopeless and worthless, Job must be guilty. And while Bill Dad's advice is not good, I want to

2:09.5

be clear, it's not good, it does beg the question. If God is big and humans in comparison are small and experience suffering or seem to experience

2:20.8

distant from God, how can we experience hope or joy?
