| 0:00.0 | All right now, if we're honest, reading the Bible consistently can be a challenge, but it's never |
| 0:05.4 | too late to start, and we're in this together. This is the Join the Journey podcast. |
| 0:12.7 | Thanks for joining. Hannah Stobbs here with the Watermark Institute, and today we're jumping into Job |
| 0:17.4 | chapter 6. At this point in Job, he has listened to his first round of advice from |
| 0:22.3 | his friend Elaphaz, the Teminite. Elifaz tries to give advice to Job about the current state |
| 0:27.4 | of his suffering, and although we can't fully understand the intentions of Elifaz's heart, |
| 0:32.5 | we do see that there is a challenge to Job's character. One commentator rephrases Elifaz's advice and says it like this. |
| 0:39.9 | If Job will accept his situation as God's discipline, he'll be spared from his trouble and brought into ripe old age. |
| 0:47.4 | Yikes. |
| 0:48.5 | Job isn't just assumed to be living in sin by Elifaz, but in a way, he also seems to be lying to his friends |
| 0:55.5 | about the status of his heart. Is he sinning and lying to his friends? That seems to be what |
| 1:00.0 | his friends think of him. Have you ever been there where your friends think they know something |
| 1:04.0 | going on with you, but they're dead wrong? I know I have. In a way, that can actually be really |
| 1:09.2 | painful. So how does Job respond to such advice? |
| 1:12.4 | That's where we pick up in Job 6. And we see in Job 6 versus 8 through 13 Job's true desire. |
| 1:18.7 | He asks for God to either crush him or bless him. The suffering that he's under is too great. |
| 1:24.5 | The desire that he has for life is really over, for the Lord to allow him to pass |
| 1:29.8 | through death. Something important to note from these passages of scripture is Job is not |
| 1:36.5 | insinuating that he wants to commit suicide in this passage, but rather that he knows these things to be |
| 1:42.6 | true. God is the author and giver of life. |
| 1:46.2 | Job is in immense suffering at the moment, and he would rather not have to continue on |
| 1:51.8 | than suffer in this way. If this sounds like your situation first, I'm so sorry you're in such |
