Summary
Can we actually make plans? Are we autonomous in making plans? Today Emma Dotter breaks down a dynamic that all people face: the sovereignty of God and the freewill of man when it comes to make decisions. Man’s will is free because God is sovereign. This truth can give us daily confidence.
Additional Scripture referenced in this episode:
Proverbs 20:24, “A man’s steps are from the Lord; how then can man understand his way?”
Revelation 17:17, “for God has put it into their hearts to carry out his purpose by being of one mind…”
Ezra 7:27, “Blessed by the Lord, the God of our fathers, who put such a thing as this into the heart of the king…”
Daniel 2:19-21, “He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding;”
James 3:1, “Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness…”
Jeremiah 17:9-10, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?…”
Romans 8:28, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, and those who are called according to his purpose.”

| 0:11.6 | Today, we're reading Proverbs 21, answering the question, can we actually make plans? |
| 0:17.5 | The proverb begins by discussing how the Lord turns the hearts of kings wherever he |
| 0:21.9 | wishes, and that every way seems right in a man's heart. So are we as God's people |
| 0:26.5 | autonomous in our ability to plan? Proverbs 21, 1 through 2 reads in the ESV. The king's heart is a stream |
| 0:35.0 | of water in the hand of the Lord. He turns it wherever he will. |
| 0:39.1 | Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord weighs the heart. In short, verse one is |
| 0:44.7 | talking about God's providence over the leaders of nations. The actions of an individual affect |
| 0:50.0 | themselves and those nearby, whereas the actions of a king affect the entirety of a nation, |
| 0:56.0 | and God is sovereign over the fate of such a nation. Now, verse two, it zooms back out. If verse one |
| 1:02.8 | is zooming in on the leaders of nations, verse two is leveling the playing field. The hearts of all |
| 1:08.3 | men, the hearts of all people, are inclined to scream, I am right, |

| 1:25.5 | was teaching our class, And he was talking about this |
| 1:28.4 | mythical sea creature from the ancient Near Eastern School of Thought. It's called the Viathan, if you've |
| 1:33.2 | ever heard of it. And back when I was in college, I attended this apologetics course, which I now know |
| 1:39.2 | wasn't a very trustworthy source of information. And in fact, it was at this day in the Watermark Institute that I |
| 1:45.6 | discovered such a reality, because as Nathan began to teach, he asked us what we knew about Leviathan, |
| 1:52.7 | this sea creature. And I confidently raised my hand and said, don't some people think Leviathan's |
