| 0:38.6 | Laws dictate what is criminally wrong and punishable, |
| 0:42.0 | and as citizens, we have the ability to propose that legislation |
| 0:45.5 | and watch those laws be voted into action. |
| 0:49.3 | Citizens also elect many of the government officials who vote on those laws. |
| 0:56.2 | It is these pieces of legislation and elected legislators that control a survivor's sense of safety, protection, and ultimately |
| 1:02.5 | their future. Exercising our right to vote is intrinsically intertwined with our potential to |
| 1:09.1 | support crime victims and hold perpetrators accountable. |
| 1:13.6 | For example, some lawmakers have created legislation that abolishes parole, |
| 1:18.6 | which deeply affects a victim's journey and the way they may or may not have to continue to advocate for themselves. |
| 1:25.6 | Another example is displayed in the devastating cuts to |
| 1:29.1 | VOCA, or Victims of Crime Act. Voka covers the out-of-pocket costs that victims often face |
| 1:35.7 | related to crimes, like medical and dental care, counseling, crime scene cleanup, or funerals and |
