I am your guide, Derek Hayes.

A good evening, indeed, on this, the spookiest of nights.

They say Halloween is one night a year when the veil between our world and the next grows dangerously thin.

Its roots stretch back over 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Sowan,

a night when villagers lit bonfires to ward off restless spirits, set to wander

the darkened countryside. When Christianity crept across Europe, the church repurposed the pagan

right in an attempt to commandeer the holiday, renaming it All Hallows Eve, a prelude to all saints day.

But the dead, it seems, didn't get the message.

They lingered in the traditions, and carved turnips meant to scare off demons,

in offerings given to beggars, praying for wandering souls, and the bats, cats,

spiders, witches, ghosts, and goblins that came along with the ancient holiday.

Over centuries, this dark harvest ritual crossed the Atlantic, mingling with folk tales, frontier

fears, and American imagination,

transforming the holiday into the candy-coated costume-clad celebration that we know today.

But beneath the masks and the jagolanards. That ancient shadow still stirs,

reminding us that Halloween has always been a night

for the living and for the dead.
