We can't say with certainty when David penned these three Psalms, but the nature of them easily points to a crisis in his life.

And after our study of Amnon's sin and Absalom's revolt, David is definitely in yet another season of crisis.

As he cries out to the Lord in these Psalms, we will also experience his confidence in the Lord.

We too can pray these Psalms in times of crisis. They remind us that we need not wallow and self-pity or feel defeated.

Instead, we can rejoice in our faithful God. He is all we need. So let's dive in and learn more about these truths David shared from a troubled heart resting in God.

Psalm 61 is an individual limit. This just means it wasn't typically sung corporately, but individuals would sing it as a prayer to the Lord.

We can feel David's depth of emotion as he asks God to hear his cry and pay attention to his prayer.

Whenever crisis he faces, he knows he can't face it without God. In verses 3-4 he says,

When David speaks of the rock and strong tower, he acknowledges that true safety only comes from the Lord.

And when he says he will dwell in the tent forever, we want to remember that he's referencing the tabernacle.

David desires to be in God's presence always. Over the course of a crisis-filled life, David has learned where true rest lies.

As the Psalm continues, David uses language that reminds himself and us of God's covenant.

In verses 6-7 he says,

David is not petitioning God for these things because God has already promised them.

David is praying back to the Lord the truths of his character and David's own reliance on God's promises.

We have the joy of seeing this covenant fulfilled in Christ. Because of Christ, we dwell in God's presence forever just as David prayed.

We can pray this Psalm in victory and hope as we await Christ's return.

David continues in a song of certainty in Psalm 62. David doesn't petition or ask for anything in this song.
