Leigh Roy Dick knew the smell of death.

It's a note you don't forget once you're acquainted with it, no matter how hard you

might try, and Leigh Roy had encountered it countless times while on the battlefield

during the Civil War.

So when he arrived at an abandoned log cabin in Lebette County, Kansas in 1872 and was

greeted by that unmistakable stench, his adrenaline rose as quickly as his heart sank.

He had come to the property because the cattle driver by the name of Billy Toll knew the

family who owned it and was surprised to find it empty as he led some cattle by one

day.

Toll had approached to find a starving cow and a dead calf in the barn.

When a wave of flies engulfed him inside the cabin, he figured he'd done enough exploring

for one day.

He reported this to the town trustee who called for volunteers to assist in searching

the vendor's property.
