These people are caught completely by surprise as the familiar world they know disappears and they find themselves either in a very distant past or future of the place they are physically in. Such as touring French palaces to find themselves very literally visiting a long distant past or breaking down on a country road and finding themselves on the outskirts of an impossible future city with flying cars!
