Summary

The first body discovered on a California hillside in late 1977 didn't make much news, but as the body count kept growing, so did the headlines -- and the sense of panic. The slayings, soon dubbed by the media as the work of the "Hillside Strangler," had Los Angeles-area women on edge day and night. It wouldn't be until a pair of similar murders occurred in Washington state that LA police would finally get a big break in the terrifying case.

"Crimes of the Centuries" is a podcast from Grab Bag Collab exploring forgotten crimes from times past that made a mark and helped change history.

Janking didn't mind taking the bus, not even at night when the characters in downtown Los Angeles

could admittedly get a little sketchy. She sometimes had to fend off unwanted attention,

that comes with the territory when you're a tall slender beautiful blind, but she knew how to

take care of herself. She had just missed a bus so she planted herself on a bench to wait for the

next one. It was November 10, 1977, and Jane had just finished enacting class at one of the church

of Scientology buildings. Soon a young man approached and sat non-threateningly at the other end of

the bench. How long do we have to wait? He politely asked Jane. Probably a little bit since we

just missed the last one, she said. The two started talking. The man said he was new to the area

and seemed relieved to have found someone friendly to chat with. People were nice in LA, but there

were some weirdos too, he confided. It can't be too careful. Then he and Jane started talking about

Jane's acting class, which of course led to some questions about Scientology. The religion found

it by science fiction writer Elron Hubbard, whose book Diagnetics was at its core. The man said he

was curious about learning more. Then a car approached. Kenny, you need a ride? A voice boomed.

The man talking with Jane peered into the car and said, hey, wow, what luck, that's my cousin.
