The thing that happened happened to a family who lived 500 miles from Forks in Spokane.

They became collateral damage in a culture war inflamed by a national media that had become too polarized and ideological.

The family remains too traumatized to give interviews interviews they told us.

But one of them did tell the story to Matthew

because of his advocacy work.
